"A cleansing catalogue"
Risograph Zine, Self-Published
Toronto, 2015, Edition of 150
Self-published and circulated anonymously under the nom de plume Double D's, Aqua Solo explores the idea of water and the act of cleansing as an antidote to the effects of media and technology. Inspired by the ideas in Marshall McLuhan’s book "The medium is the massage," the collages and poetry sample language from the mythologies of corporate advertising and beauty products.
Toronto-based artist duo, Double D’s, conceives Aqua Solo, a deep-cleansing zine replete with poetry and images of watery, spaesthetic vacation-scapes. Pages lay under 4-colour neon risographs of watery “mall-erfall” landscapes with icy-clean porcelain, no-make up tutorials, before/after make-overs and beach-ready ‘beauty shots’ of me-time at the mani-pedi salon. Aqua Solo: a cellphones-off-for-take-off aeroplane sanitarium obsessively chiming “No More Notifications” like a commercial for a technological cleanse on neon pink robo-massage-chairs with a side of pop-soda spray tans. The Institute of Contemporary Arts calls it, “feel good look good neon riso poetry.”
